We couldn’t let Bert’s 90th birthday pass without a toast to him at coffee break during our July session at Ewelme. No doubt all that Green Gym activity has contributed to his longevity. The age gap between Bert and Lara, our youngest member, is 76 years! Must be some sort of record for active members of a conservation group.
With that staggering thought we returned to our task of clearing the watercress each side of the bund below the bridge – there were no channels to be seen when we started. First we had to clear a channel to the bund so the cut material could be moved to the bank, where it was put into barrows to be taken for composting. These were heavy tasks, using all our muscles, but we had a lot of fun working together to get the water flowing freely once more.
